Why I Will Not Vote for Sarah Palin.

Women Against Sarah Palin.

Women Against Sarah Palin is a project collecting letters and testimonials from American women, explaining why we are not supporting her candidacy. John McCain’s advisors seem to have told him that he will get “The Female Vote” by slipping a woman onto his ticket. The truth is, there is no elusive Female Vote. There are only female voters.

Feminism is not the translation of a male patriarchy to a female matriarchy. Feminism is a philosophy of equality. As such, it is inherently anti-feminist to vote for a woman because she is a woman. It is demeaning to vote for a woman based solely on her gender. The implication is that she cannot stand on politics and experience alone. The implication is that a woman can only survive in politics (or in the workplace in general, or in society at large), if she is granted special consideration. To support a female candidate based upon her gender is to define womanhood as a handicap.

I will no more vote for Sarah Palin because of her gender than I would defend Not voting for her on the basis of gender.

I am not a supporter of Sarah Palin because her politics are backward thinking, anti-progressive, destructive and demeaning.

Sarah Palin supports drilling in the Alaskan wilderness. She believes in the permanent destruction of the environment in order to eek out a few more years of consumption of a dying resource. It’s a fact. We will run out of oil. And there are alternative power sources available and in development. With more incentives to use alternative fuels, we can stretch the oil we do have, as we perfect the emerging technologies that will propel us into the future. There is no reason to permanently destroy the planet in order to prolong the inevitable movement to alternative fuels.

Sarah Palin is destructive to animals. She has fought to keep the Polar Bear from being protected as an endangered species. She is a hunter. She supports the practice of shooting large game from airplanes. Both humans and animals are harmed by blood lust as sport.

Sarah Palin believes in teaching Christian Creationism in science classrooms. Our constitution separates church from state in order to leave our citizens free to practice their own beliefs – the original reason for this separation was to protect puritanical Christians…but now that Christians feel less oppressed, they would like to reverse this core value in order to promote their own views. The goal of science is not to overturn religion, but to determine how the universe works. Science and religion are neither mutually exclusive, nor equitable forces. Contrary to common belief, Creationism is addressed in American public schools. In Literature, History, and Philisophy classes, where it belongs. It is a school of thought, not a branch of science. Parents are free to continue their child’s education outside of school, and delve more deeply into their own personal beliefs. What Sarah Palin is hoping to accomplish is the profession of her belief system as fact.

Sarah Palin is against homosexuality. Not only does she oppose gay marriage, and support bills to block partner rights; Sarah Palin attends a church that promotes the conversion of homosexuals into socially acceptable heteronormative people.

Sarah Palin believes in overturning Roe v. Wade and revoking a woman’s right to control her own body. Before abortion was legalized, abortions already took place. Upper Class women would travel overseas to a safe and legal abortion in another country. Middle Class women would travel to big cities for back alley abortions at a steep price – including permanent reproductive damage and rape by supposed “doctors.” Those who can find a way to have an abortion will always do it if they deem it necessary. Which means only the lowest income bracket are left unable. There is a direct corrolation between legalized abortion and crime statistics. In essence, 18 years after abortion became legalized, crime dropped in proportion to the number of abortions performed. …Rescending Roe v. Wade will mean tens of thousands of unwanted children born to women who can’t or won’t take care of them. Let’s respect the women who find themselves in situations in which abortion is the necessary and responsible decision – for themself, for their unborn baby, and for the wellbeing of the community into which the child would be born.

I respect Sarah Palin’s intelligence and success. I respect her integrity and her consistency. But I have no respect for her politics, and I absolutely do not support her candidacy.

I will not vote for John McCain, just because he has added a woman to his ticket. I would not vote for Sarah Palin if she were in the presidential slot. And my reasons for disavowing support for Sarah Palin are exactly the same as the reasons I don’t support John McCain. She is a bloodthirsty social conservative who would happilly brainwash the gay population and American children, revoke my reproductive rights, and physically destroy the world.

I say no to Sarah Palin, and I say no to John McCain.

    This is awesome, B — very well-written.

Your reasons are exactly the same as mine. It’s about the issues, people!

My only possibly point of contention with what you wrote is that I’m not sure I respect her consistency. From what I’ve read, she was very much in favor of the “Bridge to Nowhere” until it became politically inconvenient. Now she brags about how she said “no thanks” but doesn’t bother to mention that Alaska kept the money anyway. To me, that’s not consistency.

That’s a good point. She has done a lot of political side-stepping – however it could be argued that this is a fine quality, as it demonstrates that she is willing to adjust her opinion in light of new information.

….I do respect that her views on abortion are reflected in her daughter’s intent to carry her baby to term….although I think it’s a horrible tragedy that a child is being used as an example. Bristol Palin’s entire life will be permanently set on a new course, and I’m sure that it was not Bristol who made the decision..

In general, whether I agree or not, I can respect a person when I see that their actions are consistent with their professed values and beliefs.

    Great analysis.

    I agree.
Ya have to wonder how stupid they think we are.

They find Clarence Thomas, the only black man in America who hates civil rights and make him a Supreme Court justice.
They invent death from the sky and call it a Patriot Missile.
They rape the environment and call it the “Healthy Forests Initiative”
They spy on Americans and call it the “Patriot Act.”

Now they put up Bush in bra and call it “change!”
    Give me a break!

Great points, I don’t like Palin’s positions either. I laughed at the last part-”She is a bloodthirsty social conservative who would happilly brainwash the gay population and American children, revoke my reproductive rights, and physically destroy the world” because I just pictured a giant fire-breathing Sarah Palin crushing a city.

It worries me that so many people seem to still champion her as a feminist hero :/. Well, there’s still plenty of time I guess. Hopefully they see how Biden has a good history with legislating for women’s rights.

I am disgusted with her. Now I am pro-life (and I really don’t want to get into that huge discussion here) but I’m very much pro-birth control knowledge and decent sex ed classes, and
i’m sure she’s not a fan of that. Also, being bisexual, I’m personally offended by her anti-gay beliefs, and on top of that, she buys into the ex-gay myth? Really now. This woman is making me crazy. And you know what? They might just win. A lot of people WILL vote for her because she;s a woman, I think. And because we got Bush twice, clearly there’s no lack of conservatives here. Sigh. Is there a way out of this?

  6. September 11, 2008 at 12:54 pm

This is very well-written, and I’m glad that other people are paying attention to her. I’m so offended by people thinking it is okay to teach Creationism in a science classroom. I’m about to be a high school biology teacher in Georgia, and teaching evolution is going to be very difficult for me as it is, especially when there is so much inconsistency. When I was student teaching last fall, the mentor teacher I was with (a “strong Christian woman”) actually told our students that evolution was wrong, the textbook was wrong, and that the only reason we taught it was because it was required by the state. And the students didn’t challenge this. I know that I live in the Bible Belt, but that doesn’t mean we should disregard SOUND scientific fact! I think the worst part is that people hear that evolution is a “theory,” but don’t realize that a scientific theory is not the same thing as a regular theory! A scientific theory is one that is consistently supported with facts over and over again. I get so upset.

Also, about the anti-abortion thing and Bristol; I think it is such a horrible double standard that her teenage daughter is pregnant and they are acting like everything is A-okay, like teen pregnancy isn’t a big deal. She said something like, “She’s going to have a difficult life, but we are here for her, blah blah blah.” All I can think is, What about those teenagers who DON’T have rich white politician parents to take care of them when they get pregnant? What if abortion is the only thing that will allow them to live a better life? People can say all they want, “Oh, if you’re old enough to have sex, you’re old enough and responsible enough to deal with the consequences,” but that’s not the way life goes. Sex is very prevalent in our society, even with those people who want to act like they are above such a “sin.” I know that I would rather a young girl get an abortion than bring a child into the world that she doesn’t have the means to take care of and it ends up in a very unhappy and unhealthy environment. Of course Bristol can keep her baby! She has mommy and daddy and the dad’s family to help take care of all the expenses! It’s disgusting. I wish people could really and truly look past their own stations in life and take a look at what “real life” is like, not sheltered suburbia.

And I don’t understand what the big deal is about homosexuality. I know a girl who is one of my best friends and she has a two year old daughter, but she’s gay, and you know what? She takes amazingly good care of her child with her partner, who happens to be another woman. And hell, she’s probably a better parent than most!

Just to kind of wrap this up (sorry, I went a little crazy), I just want to say that there was a woman I was reading about in the paper recently who got sentenced to life in prison because she PUT HER ONE MONTH OLD BABY IN A MICROWAVE AND KILLED IT BECAUSE SHE GOT IN A FIGHT WITH HER BOYFRIEND ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT HE WAS THE FATHER. I think I’d have rather she had an abortion.

Okay, that was mumble-jumble and if it didn’t make sense, sorry, but I just had to get that off my chest and you provided me with an outlet. Thanks.

(Oh, and PS, I know I don’t “know” you, I just watch your photostream religiously on Flickr, but I seriously had a dream and you were in it the other day. Can’t remember the details, and I forgot to mention it earlier, but I just thought it was interesting.)

i will not vote for palin…..nor mccain….for the same reasons you wrote.

early on in this circus, i thought mccain might not be so bad if he wins. now i am seriously researching how i could move to canada. he’s worse than bush, and i thought bush was bad. i could not imagine the electorate being so stupid as to vote against their interests, after they realized that they’re worse off.

but the trend seems to be that way; the hell with logic [obama] palin is fun, hot in that forbidden librarian way, let’s vote for her!

this is…what, self-schadenfreude? utter stupidity? worse?

there is a way out – I hope: email every woman you know about the ISSUES and Sarah Palin’s stance on them. Find one that hits home. The polls and pundits are telling us that Hillary supporters are jumping ship just so they can vote for a woman…It makes me embarassed to be one. So we need to tell them how different and completely disparate Palin’s and Clinton’s views are!!

Amen to all of that! I am so nervous at the bump McCain’s getting in the polls, seemingly for adding Palin to the ticket. Really? Are women really that shallow that they would trade their rights for the mere fact of a woman in a powerful political office? I really hope that in the next couple of months, logical arguments like these gain traction.

Its all about populist media politics, image rather than substance. I wonder whenever the people will realise how much they are being manipulated? Particularly so in America. It amazes me at times how much the news is manufactured and slanted over with you. Maybe some day the populace will wake up and realise that the wool has been pulled over their eyes.
Just as well we have still have the internet to fall back on,but I wouldn’t count on freedom of information lasting long under conservative government.
As for this senator, yeh she may look hot, but its not looks that will define her, but what she stands for or against.
Its not even like she writes her own speeches is it?? Anyone for a Sound bite? >:)

As an independent voter, I find the Democratic party to be as equally infuriating by their endless junk mail to me because I am a female voter. The reigning sentiment seems to be that no female could ever vote any ticket other than Democratic simply because of reproductive “choices.” So, the shoe definitely fits both feet.

    Thanks for posting!

    Becca,

It’s interesting that you say that – I’ve never looked at it that way – and I know a lot of women out there are fervently against abortion. And a lot are more fervently pro-choice than I am. I see it as a complex issue that troubles me, but the more I look into it, the more I solidify my views. I guess that’s why I put so much time in describing it.

On the flip-side, environmentalism is an easy answer for me – I’ve always loved animals and loved the environment. For me that’s less of a logical assessment and more a description of my core values. I don’t have much to say about it because it’s very visceral to me. I guess my environmentalism can match the religion of stereotypical conservatives. It’s so true to me that I don’t have any specific arguments to prove its truth.

    I hate her. :(

  15. September 15, 2008 at 5:23 pm

I don’t like either presidential candidate but I’m voting for McCain because I feel he is the better choice for me and I really don’t like Obama. Although I disagree on some of the issues you spoke on it gives me comfort that you aren’t voting for Palin because you don’t like the way she looks or sounds or that you like the energy of Obama. You took a look at the issues and I thank you for that. Too many people on both sides of the aisle make decisions based on trivial facts.

Agreed. I’m sorry to hear you and I don’t share political views (I hope by “don’t like Obama” you mean you don’t like his standing politically!) Though I will say I hope you continue to examine the issues and candidates and keep an open mind! :D .

My biggest pet peeve right now is that people aren’t voting the issues. The whole debate seems to have turned to “should women vote for that chick?” It’s absurd.

  17. September 16, 2008 at 11:54 am

Yes I don’t like Obama’s political standing. It’s very frustrating. It doesn’t matter if Sarah Palin has a family she needs to take care of. It doesn’t matter if Obama goes to a radical church. What matters is how they feel about abortion, foreign policy, education, energy, social security, and health care.

Too bad that the only thing the Republicans seem to care about is religion and right to life!
It is about time that the Government got out of our bedrooms and our churches and started
thinking and doing something about the unemployed, banks failing, housing market, health care, fuel saving cars, and bringing the soldiers home from Iraq!
